“Bismillah” (In the name of Allah)
This simple invocation acknowledges that the act of eating begins with the name of Allah, seeking His blessings upon the food.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also advised:
“When one of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah. If he forgets to mention the name of Allah at the beginning, then let him say: Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirihi.” Translation: In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end.
This indicates the importance of mentioning Allah’s name both at the start and end of the meal.
After completing the meal, it’s encouraged to say:
“Alhamdulillah” (All praise be to Allah)
This expression of gratitude acknowledges Allah’s provision of sustenance.
The etiquettes surrounding eating in Islam, including reciting these supplications, stem from the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and are rooted in gratitude, mindfulness, and acknowledgment of dependence on the Creator.
